Organic growth is the holy grail of all growths. And I get a ton of questions on how I’ve managed to 10X my account since August 2017 (at the time of writing this I have just over 50k followers on Instagram). I didn’t use any hacks or snake oil – I used common sense, experimented and found what works best for me! So here are my 5 top tips for organic growth on social media!
1. Find your niche
Find what you are interested in talking about. Social media is about storytelling, so what story are YOU telling? What are your values? Who is your target audience? As much as we would like to, we can’t target everyone or please everyone for that matter.
So decide on who your audience is and who it is that you’re talking to. I literally created a persona for my ideal follower recently and gave her a name! This will make things easier for you – not only with content creation but also by helping you understand who is the person on the other side and how you should talk to them. And ultimately, it will help you find things like hashtags, groups, media outlets for potential PR and people to collaborate with. This is the number one thing that you need to figure out for yourself to grow your blog or a social media account.
2. Shareable content
You want to make sure that you are creating content that doesn’t only stand out, but that also makes people want to share it with their friends. Why? Because that is another way to spread the word about what you’re doing.
Again it’s very helpful to understand who you are targeting with your content because then you understand what they will want to share!
3. Stay consistent
Consistency is key when it comes to social media. You should aim to create expectations when it comes to the different topics you discuss, the visual style or quality of your work, your tone and/or voice, the time of posting, etc.
People like consistency, they want to know what to expect from you. And it also helps with the algorithm gods! Algorithms want you to stay consistent and to engage with your audience on a regular basis. So whatever shape or form consistency takes in your world, stick to it.
Yes, you can change or pivot, but expect it to be a potentially uncertain time in terms of engagement and all of the other metrics you may be watching. Until you create new expectations and a new sense of consistency 😉
4. Use metadata
I’m using this word to summarize all things related to SEO – because you do need to tell whatever platform you’re using, what your content is about.
If your platform is a blog, then it’s literally SEO. If it is YouTube, then it is the title of the video, the description, tags and subtitles. If it is Instagram – then it is hashtags! Make sure that you’re utilizing and optimizing those little fields to let your content be discovered by as many interested people as possible.
5. Aim to create a community
It’s interesting that when we think of an influencer, we often think about their achievements. But they wouldn’t be there if it wasn’t for their community and if it wasn’t for their community building skills.
Because these people, this audience, is your tribe. They are the ones consuming your content, sharing it and advocating for you when needed. They are your clients, they are your boss and they empower you to live the life that you want to live. Be conscious of that and make sure to respect and nurture your community. Engage with them on a regular basis and add value to their lives!
Let me know what other tips you would add to this list. And if there’s something from this list that you feel like you’re nailing!
